Kenitra’s Historical Buildings Protected as Interior Ministry Halts Demolitions

The Ministry of the Interior has formally prohibited the demolition of buildings classified as heritage of the city of Kenitra.
In a correspondence, the governor of the prefecture of Kenitra, Fouad Mhamdi, reminded the presidents of the communes and the mayor of the city, Aziz Rebbah, Al Akhbar reports. This is the formal prohibition of granting building permits on sites classified as heritage of the city.
The Interior deemed it necessary to make this reminder because of the actions of a real estate developer. The latter has launched demolition work on a site dating from 1929 and classified as historical heritage of the city to build apartment buildings. A general outcry has indeed been raised in favor of the preservation of this site. Civil society has denounced this real estate speculation.
The same source reports that historical sites would have been ceded to real estate developers close to the decision-makers of the urban commune of Kenitra. They were supposed to demolish these sites to build residential complexes. There were also negotiations for a site adjacent to the prefecture of the city.
