Highway Scams and Threats Plague Moroccan Motorists, Authorities Urged to Act

Many motorists are victims of assaults and scams at highway rest areas along the Tangier-Rabat-Casablanca-Settat-Marrakech axis. Exasperated, owners of service stations and employees of certain cafes are calling on the authorities to take responsibility.
Scams on Moroccan highways. Hooded individuals, mostly from the criminal milieu, force network users to pay fees for parking their cars at rest areas. Their modus operandi is to lie in wait before taking action. Those who refuse to pay are threatened, reports Rue20. These bandits operate in many stations, such as those in Mansouria near Kenitra, as well as the stations in Berrechid, Settat, Casablanca, and Mohammedia. Among them are individuals with criminal records.
Faced with this strange and dangerous phenomenon, the owners of service stations and employees of certain cafes and restaurants operating in these stations deplore the inaction of the authorities. They claim to have filed numerous complaints with the Royal Gendarmerie. Without success.
