High-Speed Rail Boosts Tangier Tourism, Overnight Stays Surge Past 1 Million

The Tangier destination is increasing its figures and gaining credibility in terms of tourism by recording a high number of visitors. The commissioning of the high-speed rail line (TGV) and the development of the industrial sector have managed to boost tourism in the city of the Strait.

While in the past the number of overnight stays struggled to reach one million, it took a more than happy turn in 2019 by exceeding one million. The number of overnight stays recorded by the classified tourist establishments in the city stood at nearly one and a half million overnight stays, i.e. a growth of 8% compared to 2018.

For operators in the sector in Tangier, the curiosity to discover this new generation means of transport has allowed national tourists to rediscover the destination by enabling fast connections with the center of the country. And it’s an experience that has attracted many visitors, even outside traditional vacation periods.

According to L’Économiste, the effect is also felt in the opposite direction. Operators have assured that those who wanted to go to the center of the country and did not have the means to do so by plane, seized the opportunity of the TGV. These include tourists from southern Spain, tourists staying on the Costa del Sol who can enjoy longer excursions.

The TGV has also multiplied the effect of the industrial sector on tourism. The ramp-up of the automotive sector in particular has encouraged travel between Tangier and Casablanca via the TGV to the great benefit of the classified hotels in the capital of the Strait.
