France-Morocco Relations Strained Despite Diplomatic Efforts to Ease Tensions

On the occasion of Catherine Colonna’s visit to Morocco, she announced the return to normal relations between Rabat and Paris. But this easing of tensions is being challenged by Moroccan MPs since the European Parliament overwhelmingly adopted a resolution on the deterioration of press freedom in Morocco.
The Moroccan parliament accuses France of having "orchestrated" an anti-Moroccan campaign in Brussels. "Behind this decision is a country we thought was a friend and a reliable partner, but the smell of gas has made it lose its head," said Ahmed Touizi, a deputy from the majority, pointing to the rapprochement between Paris and Algiers.
In response to these criticisms, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its spokesperson, is playing the card of appeasement. "On the contrary, we are in an exceptional partnership that we intend to nurture," said Anne-Claire Legendre during a press briefing, stressing Paris’ desire to place this bilateral relationship "in the next 10 to 20 years".
According to her, Catherine Colonna’s recent visit is proof that Paris wants to have good relations with Rabat on all levels. "Parliament exercises its prerogatives independently. France maintains a deep friendship with Morocco with which it addresses all issues, including human rights," she added.
