Former Spanish Foreign Minister Defends Polisario Leader’s Entry as "Political Decision"

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya, reaffirmed on Thursday that the entry into Spain of Brahim Ghali, the leader of the Polisario Front, was a "political" decision justified by Spain’s legendary "humanitarian tradition".
"This decision (Ghali’s entry), which is political and not administrative, must remain in this order. I respect the ability of States to make political decisions without having to undress in front of the world," said Gonzales Laya in an interview with Cadena Ser.

The former minister stressed that she has always worked for dialogue and has worked "very closely and closely" with Morocco as head of Spanish diplomacy. "I have the greatest respect for Morocco. And that hasn’t changed. In the same way that our country has a humanitarian tradition that it does not want to renounce," she said.

When asked if her departure from the government was a demand from Morocco, González Laya said it was not up to her to answer this question. "You know, in politics, when you are appointed to a position, you have to expect to leave it one day. It must be accepted with serenity," added the former minister who has fond memories of her time as head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "It was a great opportunity. I learned a lot," she specified.
