Spain’s Foreign Minister Ousted Amid Diplomatic Crisis with Morocco

Saturday 10 July 2021, by Prince

Arancha González Laya is no longer, as of this Saturday, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs. The head of government, Pedro Sanchez, has just thanked her on the occasion of the reshuffle. José Manuel Albares, until now Spanish ambassador to France, is the new head of Spanish diplomacy.

Laya pays the heavy price of her "disastrous" management of the serious diplomatic crisis opened with Morocco after the reception in April of Brahim Ghali in a hospital in Logroño, and the migratory crisis that followed with the massive entry in May of Moroccan migrants. She was ousted from the government by Pedro Sanchez who wants to energize Spanish foreign policy and find a lasting solution to this major crisis with Morocco, with the "sensitive" issue of the Sahara in the background.

Arancha González Laya has always been criticized at the head of Foreign Affairs. Apart from the mismanagement of diplomatic and migratory crises with Morocco, she is also blamed for having contributed to weakening Spanish foreign policy, or rather for having done nothing to strengthen relations between Spain and the United States. Proof of this, Pedro Sanchez has still not officially met with US President Joe Biden since the latter took office. He had the opportunity to briefly exchange (in 29 seconds) with him during the NATO summit in Brussels. The images of this "meeting" between Sanchez and Biden have severely undermined Spain’s credibility.
