All Ferries Between Tangier and Tarifa Cancelled Due to Winds of 80 km/h

The port of Tarifa was closed to navigation on Saturday, September 12, from noon. This decision led to the cancellation of all scheduled departures in both directions between the Spanish port and Tangier Ville.

The suspension will remain in effect until weather conditions improve, with no precise resumption time announced, reports Europa Sur.

The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) had placed the Strait of Gibraltar under a yellow alert. Gusts of up to 80 km/h were expected, accompanied by severe disturbances at sea.

The Algeciras–Tanger Med route remains open

Affected travellers have an alternative option. At the time the closure of Tarifa was announced, crossings between Algeciras and Tanger Med were continuing to operate normally. The maritime route between Algeciras and Sebta also remained operational.

Passengers are nevertheless advised to check directly with their company whether their departure is going ahead before heading to the port, as the situation may change rapidly depending on the wind.

This interruption comes during the final weekend of Operation Marhaba 2026. Launched on June 15, the scheme intended to oversee the summer travel of Moroccans residing abroad is officially due to end on September 15.

The Tangier Ville–Tarifa route is particularly vulnerable to episodes of strong Levante winds. Operated by fast ferries, it may be suspended when sea conditions no longer allow crossings to be carried out with sufficient safety.
