Facing the Chinese giant in Russia, Moroccan blueberries find salvation in the United States

Faced with capricious weather and increased competition in Europe and Russia, Moroccan blueberry exporters have achieved a strategic breakthrough in the American market thanks to the superior quality of their production.

The successive delays in the Moroccan season, caused by heatwaves, storms and floods, have deprived exporters of their usual commercial window. According to Fresh Plaza, the peak of the harvest now coincides with an abundant global supply, making sales particularly slow on traditional markets.

In Europe, the market is saturated. One grower explains that Morocco has to face the emergence of new competitors such as Egypt. At the same time, the Kingdom is losing ground in Russia to China, which is able to export large-caliber fruits at prices that defy all competition.

"Russian buyers are turning to China, which has the capacity to export jumbo blueberries of size 22+ at prices we cannot match," he points out. This situation is exacerbated by the explosion of transportation costs and air logistics disruptions observed since the beginning of March.

Despite these challenges, Moroccan operators have been able to turn the tariff barriers affecting Latin America into an opportunity in the American market. Exporters from the Kingdom have quickly established themselves there by meeting the extremely high demands of local buyers, particularly the FDA’s health standards.

This success in the United States is based on a supply chain considered impeccable and a responsive ecosystem. According to the analysis, the high quality of Moroccan fruits makes it possible to compensate for the logistical complexity and secure sustainable market shares across the Atlantic.
