Why Moroccan avocado is suddenly soaring on the market
Moroccan avocado producers are regaining control. After flirting with crisis due to the demands of European buyers, the sector is benefiting from an unexpected rebound thanks to domestic demand. The anticipation of Ramadan is relaunching the machine and pushing farm prices up by more than 15%.
The dynamic has reversed in the space of a week. Abdelkrim Allaoui, president of the Association of Producers of the Gharb, confirms to Fresh Plazza that prices have jumped by 15% since the beginning of December. This resurgence of activity is explained by a powerful internal engine: Moroccan traders are massively building up their stocks in anticipation of the holy month. This very active local demand is absorbing the volumes and pushing farmers to accelerate the harvest again, suggesting an earlier end to the season than expected.
This scenario contrasts with the blockage at the beginning of the campaign. Until recently, the European market, saturated by the late offers from Peru and Chile, was trying to impose a drastic drop in prices, sometimes below the levels of the previous year. Foreign buyers were exerting constant pressure to drive prices down, taking advantage of the temporary abundance of Latin American supply.
Faced with this attempt at devaluation, Moroccan farmers had opted for resistance by deliberately slowing down the harvest. This retention strategy has paid off. Today, with good-sized and excellent quality fruit, the profession is better able to defend its margins. The domestic market now offers a credible alternative that allows the national production to be valued without yielding to the downward pressures of exports.
