Spain: a Moroccan family decimated due to a defective heating system

The alert was raised in the middle of the afternoon by the children’s classmates, who were concerned about their unjustified absence from school and the fact that the father had not gone to work. After trying to contact them through the intercom of the apartment located on Pontil Street, in the historic center, they finally discovered the bodies and immediately notified the Guardia Civil. Despite the rapid intervention of the firefighters and emergency services, it was already too late to save the victims. The firefighters identified the cause of the tragedy as a faulty combustion from a boiler or water heater, resulting in a fatal gas leak.

A family described as a model of integration

The victims were well known and appreciated in this town in the Axarquía region. The father, Saiid, aged 50 and residing in Spain for two decades, worked in the agricultural sector. The mother, Saidia, around 35 years old, was involved in the local association network where she taught Arabic classes. Their two sons, Mohammed, 19, and Mustafa, 17, were born in Spain. The elder worked as a hairdresser, while the younger played football for the Club Deportivo Torrox.

The news has caused a shock wave among the neighbors and the Moroccan community, whose spokesperson, Ahmed El Gharbaoui, expressed deep sadness. Many residents gathered in front of the home to pay their respects and pay tribute to this family from the Casablanca region, cited by the neighborhood as an example of integration and hard work. The funeral should take place in Torrox in the coming days.
