Drama in Tangier: dozens of migratory birds found dead

Dozens of migratory birds were found dead last week in the Tahaddart nature reserve, near Tangier. The El Manzala landfill adjacent to the said reserve could be the source of this massacre.
Local authorities and environmentalists are investigating the causes of the suspicious death of these migratory birds. A commission went to the reserve where they were found dead to ascertain the facts, reports Al Akhbar.
The commission members will check if the landfill near the reserve has used prohibited products or insecticides to contain the nauseating odors. They will also try to find out if toxic products used in the landfill have contaminated the nearby water bodies where these migratory birds come to drink.
The death of these migratory birds brings back the eternal problem of the environmental nuisances caused by the El Manzala landfill, the repugnant odors of which are strongly felt. Several families who lived in the area have been forced to move to preserve their health.
According to witnesses, a leachate leak from this landfill was recently recorded. This toxic liquid could have contaminated the ecosystem of the reserve, analyze some experts. The commission members are at work to determine the exact causes of the death of these birds. Their conclusions are eagerly awaited.
