Tangier's Once-Popular Corniche Deteriorates into Neglect and Disrepair

The Tangier Corniche, a popular destination for foreign tourists a few years ago, has now become a refuge for the homeless and beggars and a source of foul odors.

Tangier residents encountered on Mohammed VI Boulevard in Tangier expressed to the Rue20 site their outrage at the dilapidated and deteriorated state in which the Corniche is found, with the beach having been transformed into a real dump.

Local sources explained that the limited financial, human and logistical resources available to the municipality are not enough to ensure regular maintenance of the Corniche, a project that cost around 727 million dirhams.

The municipality’s resources are not in line with the demographic and urban pace of the city of Tangier, and do not allow for the installation of surveillance cameras and specialized teams to prevent the theft of equipment by criminal networks, explain the same sources.

To make up for this lack of financial resources, the competent authorities, elected or appointed, are sometimes forced to use budgets allocated to other projects to ensure the maintenance of equipment or the upkeep of the corniche.
