New Developments for the Guercif-Nador Highway

Following approval of project management assistance and compensation for landowners, construction of this 36.7-kilometer stretch has begun. As L’Économiste notes, Achraf Tarsim, AfDB country manager for Morocco, confirms that "procurement procedures for road works have also been finalized." This first dual-carriageway segment, costing 200 million euros, will connect the Fès-Oujda highway to the Guercif-Nador axis by January 17, 2028 at the latest, and will require the construction of six viaducts as well as an interchange at Saka.

The financial institution is thus catching up with the Islamic Development Bank and the Moroccan government, which are responsible for the rest of the project. Work on the second section, spanning 40.5 kilometers, has been progressing at a steady pace since January. The third part of the route connecting Driouch to the port is already 80% complete. This direct highway network will facilitate the movement of goods while reducing spatial disparities, in line with the ambitions of the New Development Model.

The AfDB’s involvement could extend beyond the road network to include the railway connectivity of the National Office of Railways (ONCF). The organization is interested in the 606 million dirham connection planned between Selouane and Nador West Med, with Achraf Tarsim stating that the bank "wishes to participate in this financing." By integrating a new line and marshaling yard, these developments will support the African Continental Free Trade Area and connect Morocco to the Cairo-Dakar trans-African corridor.
