Decathlon Halts Hijab Sales in France After Public Backlash

Less than 24 hours after announcing its intention to sell the hijab for veiled Muslim sportswomen, the French company Decathlon has backtracked and announced that sales in France have been suspended.
"We are indeed making this decision in all responsibility this Tuesday evening, not to market this product in France at the moment," explains Xavier Rivoire, Decathlon’s communications director, on RTL.
In a message posted on Twitter, the company had expressed its wish to sell its "hijab", developed by its teams in Morocco, and thus make "the practice of sport more accessible, everywhere in the world. This hijab was a need for some runners, and we are therefore responding to this sporting need."
This article, which was to be put on sale in mid-March, will therefore not be available in France, but will be in many other countries.
After disappearing for a few hours on the brand’s website in Morocco, this "breathable and non-moving during the race" hijab was available again today for nearly 79 dirhams (a little over 7 euros).
