Moroccan Man Faces Deportation Risk After Domestic Violence Conviction in France

The Caen Criminal Court sentenced a 28-year-old Moroccan man to a suspended sentence of five months in prison with probation for acts of violence against his Moroccan wife. The court also imposed a ban on contact with the victim and refused to not record the sentence on his criminal record (B2).
During the hearing, the defendant claimed through an interpreter that his relationship with his wife was "at its best". The public prosecutor doubted this statement, noting that the spouses were living separately, reports La Manche Libre. "It is worrying, because in reality, if she divorces and you do not have a shared life, you cannot remain in France," the magistrate pointed out.
The facts judged date back to March 18, 2023. In the victim’s university room in Caen, an argument had broken out after the defendant saw messages sent by a colleague on his wife’s phone. He had then pushed her and slapped her, causing bruises to her eyes and legs.
The student had filed a complaint on September 12, 2023, at the same time initiating divorce proceedings.
