US DEA and Spanish Police Bust Major Moroccan Hashish Ring in Algeciras Port

The Spanish National Police, as part of a joint operation carried out with the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) of Morocco and the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), dismantled a drug trafficking network in Algeciras. More than eight tons of Moroccan hashish were seized and five people, including a Moroccan, were arrested during the operation.

The five people were arrested as members of a criminal organization specializing in drug trafficking, particularly in hashish, from Morocco to Europe via the port of Algeciras. The investigation opened by the police six months ago revealed that a network of drug traffickers was regularly sending hashish to its European customers, through its contacts in Morocco. In this context, the members of the network used a truck that they transported on a ferry between Tangier and Algeciras, reports Cadenaser.

After identifying the truck, the agents set up a device at the port of Algeciras in order to know the destination of the imported drugs and to identify and apprehend the actors of this traffic led from the locality of Pontevedra de Cambados (Galicia). This made it possible to know the arrival time of the boat transporting the truck and to identify its driver, a Moroccan from the city of Tangier.

The police then followed the truck to its destination, a property on the outskirts of the city. On the spot, the agents saw three people unloading various boxes resembling hashish bales from the truck. A few minutes later, they proceeded to arrest a person who had come out of the property. Another member of the network, who was inside, was also arrested as he tried to flee.

The agents then secured the property in which they arrested a couple and seized a large quantity of Moroccan hashish estimated at 8,200 kilograms, as well as a firearm with ammunition, a loaded hunting rifle, a truck, two cars, several mobile phones and computer equipment. A fifth member of the network was arrested later as he tried to leave the country through the Algeciras border post.
