Dakhla Will Wait Longer for Express Highway (Broken Promise)
Questioned in the Chamber of Representatives, Equipment Minister Nizar Baraka justified the absence of a dual carriageway between Laâyoune and Dakhla. An explanation contested by the opposition, which demands the completion of the initial project.
The vast royal project connecting Tiznit to Dakhla is causing tensions in the chamber. When asked why the section between Laâyoune and Dakhla was not made into a dual carriageway, Nizar Baraka clarified the commitments made in 2015 before the King. The minister recalled that the agreement provided for an express highway between Tiznit and Laâyoune, but was limited to a reinforcement and widening to nine meters of national road number 1 up to Dakhla. "We do not lie to Moroccans, we tell them the reality," he said to a deputy from the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS).

This response is far from satisfying the elected official, who relayed the strong frustration of users. According to her, the very essence of the project was based on the dualization of the road axis to Dakhla. She urged the minister to honor this commitment concretely. The parliamentarian believes that a traditional development will quickly become inadequate given the volume of economic and logistics traffic that will result from the opening of Dakhla Atlantic port.

Facing this challenge, she demands work of equivalent quality to that of the first section. A true express highway would, according to her, shorten travel times, improve driving safety, attract investments to the south, and more efficiently connect Morocco to its African depth via El Guerguerat. In response, Nizar Baraka assured that the creation of this express highway would take place following the commissioning of the new port, once the real traffic needs have been assessed.
