New COVID-19 Outbreaks Emerge in Marrakech Neighborhoods, Health Officials Report

While the epidemiological situation seemed under control in Marrakech, two outbreaks of contamination have been detected in the neighborhoods of Sidi Youssef Ben Ali and Sidi Ayoub.
About ten people were infected with covid-19 on Sunday, June 7, at the Ibn Zohr hospital, located on the edge of the Mamounia ramparts. They mainly come from these two neighborhoods. From the samples taken on Saturday on 24 people in the Sidi Ayoub neighborhood, it appears that 18 tested positive for the coronavirus. Other cases of contamination could be recorded in the next few days in the neighboring neighborhoods of Moukef, Ibn Saleh and Arsat Houta.
The causes of these detected cases of contamination are varied: non-compliance with the generalized confinement, the demographic density of the neighborhoods of the medina and, in particular, of Marrakech intra-muros, the incivility of a fringe of the local population, the presence of street vendors...
Faced with the situation, the authorities have mobilized the security forces to surround Sidi Youssef Ben Ali and permanently control the entrances and exits, reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribia. The strengthening of the control system is followed by a strict confinement, in accordance with the instructions of the wali Kasi Lahlou following the death of an elderly person victim of covid-19 and the contamination of his entourage (65 declared cases).
Despite the detection of these new outbreaks of contamination, a source at the wilaya of Marrakech-Safi assures that "the epidemiological situation in Marrakech remains nevertheless globally under control".
