Casablanca: restaurants and hotels will soon pay for their garbage

During the review of the new specifications for the sector, the elected officials validated the principle of a financial levy imposed on establishments producing large quantities of waste. This measure mainly targets hotels, restaurants and fast food chains, which alone generate nearly 15% of the total volume of the economic capital.

To ensure the effectiveness of this reform, the Municipal Council is relying on technology and precision. Future service providers will have to mobilize trucks equipped with on-board scales. This system will allow the weighing of waste in real time in front of each establishment to establish a billing based on the actual production. In parallel, the elected officials require that the companies deploy small-sized vehicles. These will have to be able to venture into the narrowest alleys to collect the waste at the source, thus avoiding their accumulation on the main boulevards.

Beyond the technical aspect, the future cleaning contract emphasizes performance and the social aspect. The councilors have firmly insisted on the improvement of the living conditions of the cleaning agents, while establishing an iron rule for the private companies: the remuneration will now be strictly linked to the results observed on the ground.

Severe penalties are planned for any contractual breach, a strategy intended to perpetuate the aesthetic progress made in recent years on the streets of the metropolis.
