Casablanca Launches Cleanliness Police to Tackle Littering Ahead of Major Sporting Events

Casablancans, as well as people who rummage through trash cans (informal recyclers), who throw waste in the streets, are in the sights of the Casablanca municipality. It will set up an administrative cleanliness police force. Its mission will be to enforce the municipal decree on public health, cleanliness and environmental protection, which was adopted during the previous municipal council led by the Party of Justice and Development (PJD), but has not been implemented, reports Hespress. It will also have to carry out patrols in various neighborhoods and districts.

To carry out this mission, the municipality will work closely with the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) to obtain the recordings of the cameras used by the Casablanca police prefecture in order to sanction citizens who will be filmed throwing waste in the street. Financial penalties will be imposed on any person violating the rules of health and cleanliness in the city. They can reach 100 dirhams, with an increase in case of recidivism.

The Casablanca municipality will finance the budget of the cleanliness police force up to 70%, while the Ministry of the Interior will cover the remaining 30%.
