Casablanca’s Tech-Driven Makeover: 1,300 Cameras Combat Waste and Boost Security
In anticipation of hosting major sporting events such as the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN Morocco 2025), the municipal council of the city of Casablanca is installing surveillance cameras to ensure the safety of the city, but also to effectively combat illegal dumping and incivility.
Beware of anyone who dares to illegally dump waste in the main streets and roads of Casablanca. The City Council is installing more than 1,300 surveillance cameras in all districts to detect behavior that goes against the rules of cleanliness in the economic capital. Casablanca has recently been undergoing a large-scale operation to install surveillance cameras in the various streets and neighborhoods, as part of the city’s preparations for the upcoming sporting events, says Moulay Ahmed Afailal, the deputy mayor of the city in charge of the cleanliness sector, to Al3omk.
According to his explanations, the installation of the cameras is not limited to the security aspect, but also extends to monitoring the state of cleanliness and following the environmental-related behavior of citizens. These devices will help reduce certain negative practices, such as the dumping of waste in unauthorized places or the deterioration of public property. This initiative will make it possible to monitor infractions in real time and determine responsibilities, whether it is citizens or the services in charge of cleanliness, he added.
For the elected official, the use of cameras is an advanced step in the digital transformation process of the cleanliness sector in Casablanca. The objective is to create a clean, safe and intelligent city, capable of meeting the requirements of the next stage, particularly with the city hosting major international sporting events, he continued.
