Casablanca parking extortion crackdown: free zones enforced

The Casablanca-Settat authorities are ordering free parking in urban areas with no legal contract. Inspections are being launched in coastal cities to stop unauthorized fees imposed by fake attendants, particularly near beaches.

Several governors of prefectures and provinces in coastal Casablanca-Settat have asked municipalities to immediately implement new measures against illegal exploitation of motorists.

The instructions concern parking spaces on public land that are not covered by any authorization or operating agreement. In these areas, drivers must not pay any amount to park.

This intervention follows complaints filed by residents and visitors claiming they were forced to pay people presenting themselves as car or motorcycle attendants without proper authorization.

Inspections must be strengthened in the busiest areas during summer, particularly in streets near beaches, public squares and around tourist sites.

The municipalities are also called upon to install clear signage informing motorists of free parking when no legal contract provides for paid management.

In Mohammedia, signs explicitly announcing free parking have already been installed in several parking areas. This initiative comes as complaints about arbitrarily charged fees increase during the summer season.

Casablanca-Settat cracks down on fake parking attendants

Local authorities, security services and municipalities have begun conducting field operations. People who monitor vehicles without authorization or illegally occupy public space face legal action.

The goal is notably to end altercations between motorists and self-proclaimed attendants when the former refuse to pay unjustified fees.
