Beach Demolitions Near Tangier Spark Outrage: Locals Allege Favoritism for Influential Owners

The residents of a douar (rural village) located near Tanger denounce the double standards during the recent campaign to liberate the Ba Kacem beach, where establishments belonging to influential personalities were spared from demolition.

The demolitions carried out on the Ba Kacem beach last week targeted the establishments of young people from the rural environment of the region, installed on a seasonal basis on the beach, according to local sources at Hespress, specifying that other establishments belonging to "influential" personalities were not affected.

These demolitions have provoked the anger of some young people in the region who claim to have received "promises and assurances concerning the authorization to work in the area in the coming weeks," added the same sources, who believe that this decision "will be detrimental to these young people and further aggravate their social and economic suffering."

Contacted, the local authorities acknowledged that "three people" had escaped the demolitions, explaining that the latter "had permits and had filed requests for authorization and renewal." One of them has a valid authorization until next December, while the other two have filed requests to renew the permit, it is specified.

"We have given them a two-week deadline; if they do not regularize their situation, we will proceed with the demolition of what they have built on the beach," the local authorities insisted, rejecting the accusations of "favoritism" towards influential people to the detriment of vulnerable young people. According to sources, the municipality is not authorized to grant operating permits for this maritime domain.
