Barcelona Prospect Ilias Akhomach Opts for Spain Over Morocco National Team

Ilias Akhomach, the young Moroccan striker who was called up by the new FC Barcelona coach for the match against Espanyol, would have declined the offer from the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) to be part of the Atlas Lions.
Ilias Akhomach would have been contacted a few years ago by the FRMF to join the national team, believes the Spanish newspaper Marca. Sergio Piernas, mandated by the FRMF to scout young talents for the U17 team of which he was then the coach, had been attracted by the performances of the young Moroccan.
He would have exchanged with him to convince him to wear the Moroccan colors, but Akhomach would have declined the offer, reports the same source. "No thank you, but I want to play for Spain," he replied to Sergio Piernas. The latter specifies that "Akhomach was very grateful for Morocco’s interest and his roots. But he always had the clear idea of wanting to play for Spain."

Iliad Akhomach, 17, is a young player full of talent. Born in Hostalets de Pierola, Spain, he is a very technical player, as good a dribbler as a goalscorer. After his good performance in the match against Espanyol, he is again called up, with his compatriot, Abdessamad Ezzalzouli, by Barça coach Xavi Hernandez, for the match against Villarreal.
