Appeal Trial Begins for Imlil Terrorist Attack: Defense Seeks Mental Health Evaluation

The Imlil case, whose appeal trial has started in recent days, seems rich in twists and turns. After the reduction of the sentence of one accused, it is the defense of the main accused in the murder of the two Scandinavian tourists in Imlil that has renewed its request to have them subjected to a medical examination, during the hearing on Wednesday before the Criminal Chamber (2nd degree) in charge of terrorism cases near the annex of the Court of Appeal of Salé.

"Abnormal and schizophrenic", the defense appointed as part of legal aid considered that the perpetrators of this crime are affected by these types of disorders, given that their odious act cannot be committed by normal people. This was during the hearing devoted to the prosecution’s requisition and the pleadings of the civil party’s defense, the accused and the State.

According to MAP, the lawyers requested the annulment of the judgment handed down at first instance and called on the justice system to conduct medical examinations on the main accused to ensure their mental health. The representative of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, who does not see it that way, has requested the confirmation of the death penalty against the three accused of the murder of the two tourists "with execution", as well as the aggravation of the sentence of the fourth accused to bring it from life imprisonment to the death penalty.

Last July, the 24 individuals were prosecuted for "forming a gang to prepare and commit terrorist acts, attacking the lives of people with premeditation and possession of firearms and attempted manufacture of explosives in violation of the law, as part of a collective project aimed at seriously undermining public order".

In this case, they were sentenced at first instance to sentences ranging from 5 years in prison to the death penalty, recalls the MAP.

The hearing of the pleadings of the defense of the other accused will resume next Wednesday by decision of the court.
