Morocco Terror Attack: 4 Sentenced to Death in Imlil Murders Appeal

The appeal trial of the main defendants in the terrorist act in Imlil took place on Wednesday, October 30. The Criminal Chamber at the Court of Appeal of Salé, responsible for terrorism cases, sentenced the four main defendants to death, instead of three at first instance.
In addition to Abdessamad Joud, Younes Ouziad and Rachid Afatti, the fourth main defendant, Abderrahmane Khayali, saw his sentence increased from life imprisonment to the death penalty.
The verdict for all the defendants, in the murder of the two Scandinavian young women in Imlil, ranges from 5 to 30 years in prison. The latter sentence was handed down to 4 defendants.
4 defendants, including the Swiss Kevin Zoler, were sentenced to 20 years in prison, while Abdellatif Driouech, Ahmed Ait Ahmed, Abdelghani Chaabti and Zaghari Al Akil were sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The Court also handed down sentences ranging from 5 to 18 years in prison against 8 other defendants.
Furthermore, and in response to the request of the lawyers of the family of the Danish victim, Louisa Vesterager Jespersen, regarding the responsibility of the State with a view to supporting the payment of compensation, the Court confirmed the rejection pronounced at first instance, and requested recourse to the Administrative Court. In parallel, the 4 main defendants were ordered to pay the family of the Norwegian tourist a compensation of 2 million dirhams.
