Families Seek $500,000 in Imlil Tourist Murder Trial, Plan Anti-Extremism Foundation

Continuation on Wednesday of the hearing of the accused in the murder of the two Scandinavian tourists in the Imlil region (El-Haouz province). The appeal trial is marked each day by twists and surprises. The Wednesday hearing was marked by the pleadings of the lawyers of the two victims and the public prosecutor. The lawyer of the Norwegian victim announced that his client’s family was demanding 5 million dirhams in compensation.
The latter explained that his clients, the victim’s family, felt that the amount set at first instance was very low and could not compensate for the pain caused by the loss of their daughter.
They now demand 5 million dirhams that they intend to invest in the creation of a foundation bearing the name of the victim and dedicated to the fight against extremism. In addition, it was requested that this amount be paid by all those involved in this case.
As for the defense of the heirs of the Danish victim, it called for the inclusion of the Moroccan state in the file for its responsibility and alleged negligence in preventing such a tragedy.
According to Article20, lawyer Mohamed Raji estimated that the fact of having indicated on the tourist map of Morocco that this area was safe, thus inviting tourists to venture there without fear, was enough to engage the responsibility of the State in this heinous crime.
According to the same source, the lawyer also reiterated the defense’s request to summon Sheikh Mohamed Maghraoui as the legal representative of the Association of Quranic Houses where the main accused studied.
He stressed that these schools were closed by a court decision in 2008 after "more than 100 Maghraoui students joined terrorist cells", expressing his surprise that the State had decided to authorize their reopening.
