American Tourist Assaulted in Marrakech Over COVID-19 Fears, Police Investigate

The police have launched a judicial investigation following the release of a video in which a foreigner claims to have been the victim of violence from individuals who accused him of transmitting the coronavirus.
The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) stated in a press release that it had taken note of the video recording circulated on social networks, specifying that the video was accompanied by an audio recording of a Moroccan citizen. The latter is demanding justice for the foreign national who was the victim of verbal and physical violence.
According to the DGSN, the published video was the subject of a judicial investigation conducted on March 30 by the fourth district, Gueliz Security District in Marrakech. Thus, the district in charge of the case heard the Moroccan citizen, author of the audio recording, and owner of a riad where the foreign national was staying. This hearing took place following complaints filed by them against a pharmacist and his brother, residing near the riad, for violence.
The judicial police officer serving in the territorially competent Security District has continued his investigations and inquiries. He heard the pharmacist and his brother, before the procedural measures were referred to the competent public prosecutor’s office, in accordance with the legal provisions in force.
