An Algerian tears up Moroccan banknotes, he is in prison

The public prosecutor’s office at the Marrakech Court of Appeal ordered, on Tuesday, the detention in the prison of Oudaya of an Algerian supporter. The individual, identified by the initials M. R., is being prosecuted for incitement to hatred during sports events, as well as for defamation and public insults.

The arrest follows the dissemination of a video that has become viral on social media. In these images filmed at the Marrakech stadium, the accused deliberately tears up Moroccan banknotes. Apprehended in Casablanca before being transferred to Marrakech, the suspect has admitted the facts to the investigators. According to the public prosecutor’s office, this act is qualified as a deliberate attack on a national symbol, likely to disturb public order.

This case adds to other controversial behaviors that have occurred since the start of the 2025 CAN. The Algerian influencer Raouf Belkacemi has also been placed in pre-trial detention. He is accused of having disseminated a video showing him urinating in the stands of the Prince Moulay El Hassan stadium in Rabat, an act qualified as an attack on public decency.

The climate around the Algerian national team has been marked by other tensions, particularly after its elimination against Nigeria. The authorities have reported attempts to invade the pitch as well as physical assaults on Moroccan journalists in the mixed zone.
