Algeria heavily sanctioned after its excesses in Morocco
The Disciplinary Commission of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a series of sanctions on the Algerian Football Federation, following the incidents that occurred during the quarter-final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations between Algeria and Nigeria. These measures follow the match played on January 10, 2026 at the Marrakech stadium, marked by various breaches of the regulations of the governing body of African football.
On an individual level, the disciplinary body has ordered the suspension of goalkeeper Luca Zidane for a period of two matches, the execution of which will take effect during the next qualifying matches for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Defender Rafik Belghali is subject to a heavier sanction of four matches suspension, two of which are suspended, which must also be served during the qualifying phase for the 2027 edition of the tournament.
The Algerian Football Federation is also subject to significant financial penalties. A fine of $5,000 has been notified due to the inappropriate behavior of the national team, after five players were sanctioned with yellow cards during the match, constituting a violation of Article 130, paragraph a, of the Disciplinary Code. Furthermore, a fine of $25,000 has been imposed following behaviors deemed detrimental to the image of the match by certain players and officials after the final whistle, in violation of Articles 82 and 83 of the said code.
The behavior of the supporters in the stands of the Marrakech stadium has also led to heavy financial sanctions. The Commission has thus accumulated fines of $5,000 for the use of pyrotechnic devices and an additional $5,000 for the throwing of projectiles. The non-compliance with security protocols, manifested by attempts to cross the barriers, has resulted in a penalty of $10,000. Finally, a fine of $50,000 has been imposed due to behaviors qualified as insulting and offensive towards the refereeing body, characterized by the waving of banknotes by certain spectators. Faced with all these provisions, the Algerian Football Federation has announced that it has initiated the appeal procedures provided for by the applicable legal provisions in order to contest these sanctions.
