CAN 2025: CAF investigation and legal response from Algeria after shock against Nigeria

The defeat of Algeria (0-2) against Nigeria in the quarter-finals of CAN 2025 turned into chaos, triggering a double procedure: a CAF investigation for violence and a complaint from the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) for poor refereeing.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the opening of an investigation following the incidents that marred the end of the match organized in Morocco. The field and its surroundings were the scene of confused scenes. Several Algerian players surrounded Senegalese referee Issa Sy and his assistants to strongly contest his decisions, forcing the intervention of the security forces to protect the refereeing body and prevent the situation from degenerating into physical confrontations.

The disorder also spread to the stands where Algerian supporters tried to cross the security barriers. Reports also indicate damage to equipment within the sports venue. CAF is currently examining security and media reports to establish disciplinary responsibilities.

The FAF refers to CAF and FIFA against the refereeing

This Sunday, January 11, 2026, the Algerian Football Federation has officially filed, according to TSA, a request with CAF and FIFA. The Algerian body denounces refereeing deemed "scandalous" that would have distracted its players. The points of contention include:

• A penalty not whistled for a hand of a Nigerian defender in the area in the first half.

• Sanctions deemed excessive, with five yellow cards addressed to Algerian players.

• Inelegant behavior, the referee having refused to shake the hand of the Algerian player Berkane at the final whistle while greeting the Nigerian players.

The FAF claims that Algeria is not the only nation harmed by refereeing during this competition, citing the cases of Mali, Tanzania and Cameroon.

Despite these extra-sporting tensions, the competition schedule continues. Nigeria, whose ticket to the semi-finals is validated, will face Morocco in the semi-final scheduled for next Wednesday.
