CAF Slaps Algeria with Hefty Fine Over Women’s Team Misconduct at AFCON

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed financial sanctions on the Algerian Football Federation. This decision by the disciplinary committee of the continental body follows the unsportsmanlike behavior of several players of the women’s national team during the final phase of the Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco.
The disciplinary committee’s report details several breaches of the regulations. Algerian players are notably accused of having strongly protested against refereeing decisions during a quarter-final match. Beyond these protests, the sanctioned acts include the covering of the name of Morocco and the logo of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, as well as insulting remarks made against the refereeing team. The file also mentions the refusal of certain players to participate in the official media activities, an obligation within the framework of the competition.
As a direct consequence of these acts, CAF has imposed a financial penalty. This takes the form of a significant deduction from the $200,000 qualification bonus due to the Algerian team. This financial penalty is accompanied by a warning addressed to the Algerian Federation, stressing that the repetition of such actions would expose the team to heavier sanctions, which could go as far as exclusion from continental competitions.
It should be noted that the disciplinary committee also indicates that it has deferred the examination of other cases related to the course of the tournament. CAF indeed prefers to wait for the holding of the final of this Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which will oppose Morocco to Nigeria next Saturday, before considering the other pending disciplinary cases.
