Nigeria Triumphs in Women's Africa Cup as CAF Doubles Prize Money to $1 Million

The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations ended this Saturday, July 26th with Nigeria’s victory over Morocco. Beyond the sporting result, this edition, organized in Morocco, was marked by a significant increase in the bonuses paid to the teams by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The CAF had announced before the competition a global increase of 45% in the money allocated to the prizes. Thus, the Nigerian team, African champions, will receive one million dollars, twice the previous amount. Morocco, the runner-up, will receive $500,000.

According to the President of the CAF, Patrice Motsepe, this decision aims to encourage the discipline. "The CAF is pursuing its commitment to the development and progression of women’s football in Africa," he explained, adding that the players, coaches and technical teams should be the primary beneficiaries of this increase.

In addition to the CAF bonus, the Moroccan Football Federation should also pay a bonus to its players, the amount of which is not yet public. Other amounts have been planned for all participants: $350,000 for the third-placed team, $300,000 for the fourth, $200,000 for the quarter-finalists, $150,000 for the third-placed in the group and $125,000 for the fourth-placed. In total, the CAF distributed $3.475 million during this tournament.
