Morocco: What risks the Algerian who tore up a banknote?
An Algerian supporter of British nationality and Algerian origin was arrested at Mohammed V airport after being filmed tearing up Moroccan banknotes during the Nigeria-Algeria quarter-final match at the Grand Stadium in Marrakech. This gesture, which went viral, sparked strong indignation on social media.
Legally, Moroccan legislation is very strict regarding the national currency, considered as a symbol of sovereignty. According to the Penal Code, any person who deliberately destroys or alters banknotes or coins having legal tender in Morocco is liable to the following penalties:
• A prison sentence: from 1 month to 1 year.
• A fine: from 200 to 1,000 dirhams.
The suspect, who admitted the facts during his arrest, was placed in custody in Marrakech under the supervision of the competent prosecutor. For the authorities, this swift intervention aims to firmly sanction any attack on the symbols of the State and public order during this 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
