15-Year-Old Lamine Yamal Set to Break Barcelona’s Youngest Player Record

Lamine Yamal, 15, makes history at FC Barcelona. Called up for the match against Atlético Madrid on Sunday, the Moroccan prodigy from the club’s academy will become the youngest player ever called up for an official match with the first team.
Born on July 13, 2007 in Mataró (Barcelona) to Moroccan and Equatorial Guinean parents, Lamine Yamal joined La Masia at the age of 12. The young player, who has played with Óscar López and Javier Saviola’s Juvenil A, will enter the history of the club on Sunday as the youngest player to be called up for an official match with the first team. Head coach of the A team, Xavi Hernandez, has called him up for the match against Atlético Madrid scheduled for Sunday at 4:15 pm, reports La Sexta.
The player from Barça’s academy is an offensive player, fast and very technical. Versatile, he is comfortable in the positions of right winger or center forward thanks to his speed, his ability to dribble and score goals. For Patrick Kluivert, a former resident of the club, Lamine Yamal is one of the great gems of La Masia. "He is a goalscorer, a passer and a playmaker. He has the characteristics to become a great Barcelona player," the Dutchman said a few months ago.
The very young player arouses the admiration of Xavi Hernandez. "He has huge chutzpah (audacity). He’s not afraid. He’s a player who can help us because he has talent. He has a lot of personality... I’m convinced he can help us," he said at a press conference. Lamine Yamal, who has dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, is also closely followed by the national teams of both countries. In March, he was cut from the Spanish under-17 team for indiscipline.
