Here's why Brahim Diaz didn't choose Spain

While he had been hoping for years for a call-up to the Spanish national team, Brahim Diaz would not have appreciated the call-up in October of Bryan Zaragoza by Luis de la Fuente. According to a Spanish media, this decision by the Roja coach would have pushed the Real Madrid striker to choose to play for Morocco.

The call-up of Bryan Zaragoza (Bayern) on October 15 was not seen in a good light by Brahim Diaz and his father, Soufiel Abdelkader, believes AS, specifying that the two players grew up in Malaga. The Real Madrid star had been waiting for years for a call-up to the Spanish national team, after playing in the lower categories and making his debut for the Roja against Lithuania in a friendly match.

The 24-year-old player had long suffered from the indifference of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). In August 2023, Tito and Francis Hernández from the RFEF had gone to Barcelona to try to convince Lamine Yamal not to choose Morocco, despite the sanction for indiscipline that the Federation had imposed on the 16-year-old player. Also, Diaz had not been called up for the Tokyo Olympics. Yet the Madrid striker was already at the top of his game and had had a good season with AC Milan, who won the Italian championship that year.

Last January, Diaz’s father demanded from the RFEF the guarantee that his son would be selected for the European Championship in June, reported Malaga Hoy, adding that the Federation found this demand exaggerated, but nevertheless assured that Brahim would be called up for the international break matches in March. The rest is known. Brahim Diaz has decided to join the Atlas Lions. He was called up for the friendly matches against Angola and Mauritania, scheduled for March 22 and 26 at the Grand Stade d’Agadir.
