Walid Regragui cleans house: The big absentees and the new talents

The coach of the Moroccan national team, Walid Regragui, unveiled on Wednesday the list of players called up for the next friendly matches against Angola and Mauritania. As expected, several players who participated in the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire have been excluded.
The name of the captain of the Atlas Lions, Romain Saïss, as well as those of Selim Amallah, Abdessamad Ezzalzouli, Amin Harit, and Yunis Abdelhamid do not appear on the list announced on Wednesday by Walid Regragui. Similarly, Ismaël Saibari, Noussair Mazraoui, and Sofiane Boufal, injured, were not called up for these matches.
On the other hand, the list includes new names such as Brahim Diaz, Soufiane Rahimi, Ilias Akhomach, and Eliesse Ben Seghir. The Moroccan technician had announced reforms within the technical staff and the Moroccan team, after the disappointing elimination of the Atlas Lions in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023 against South Africa (2-0).
In a press release, the Moroccan Football Federation had confirmed that Regragui would make changes within the team after the defeat at the CAN. The Moroccan coach had faced severe criticism from supporters who blamed him for trusting players who did not live up to expectations.
