Unseasonable Heat Wave Grips Morocco in December

While winter is setting in and rain and snow are expected, Morocco is experiencing an unusual heat wave.
This phenomenon, which particularly affects the center and south of the country, is due to a persistent high pressure system over the Azores, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM). This is causing the convergence of hot air masses towards the kingdom, leading to temperatures well above seasonal norms.
This situation has significant consequences for the country. Farmers are on the front line facing these high temperatures, but other sectors of the national economy are also affected. Fortunately, a drop in temperatures is expected in some regions, according to the DGM.
However, vigilance remains necessary, especially in southern Morocco. The heat is expected to persist in this area due to the evolution of atmospheric pressure systems. This heat wave episode is part of a context of multiplication of extreme weather events in Morocco.
In 2023, the country recorded more than twenty such events, ranging from thunderstorms to heat waves, including exceptional snowfall in the Atlas. The latter reached up to two meters thick last February, despite a general context of drought. The DGM has also issued many alert bulletins throughout the year.
