Transavia Flight to Casablanca Diverted to Biarritz After Passenger Disrupts Crew

Passengers on a flight from Paris to Casablanca on Thursday evening ended up spending the night in the Basque Country. The unexpected diversion was prompted by the behavior of a 39-year-old man toward cabin crew. Police were waiting for him when the plane landed.

The flight was due to connect Paris-Orly with Casablanca in a few hours. But on Thursday, October 29, the journey took an unexpected turn when a passenger’s behavior forced the crew to interrupt the trip. The aircraft, which took off at 5:15 p.m., was diverted to Biarritz airport, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

According to a police source cited by Le Parisien, an unhappy passenger allegedly verbally berated three flight attendants. Transavia, for its part, described him as an “unruly passenger” whose behavior made an unscheduled landing necessary.

The man, born in 1987, was already known to police. On arrival in Biarritz, border police officers immediately arrested him and took him into custody.

The Bayonne prosecutor’s office confirmed the passenger’s arrest and said a psychiatric evaluation was to be carried out. The person traveling with him also left the aircraft and was taken into the care of law enforcement.

For the other passengers, the diversion upended their plans. They could not reach Casablanca that evening: Transavia decided to postpone the rest of the flight until Friday morning and offered affected passengers accommodation.

This type of incident has disrupted flights to Morocco before. In 2019, a Transavia flight from Paris to Marrakech had to return to Orly after a passenger tried to open an emergency exit.

This time, passengers were able to resume their journey the next day. According to the airline, the plane eventually landed in Casablanca on Friday, October 30, at 9:35 a.m., after an entirely unexpected night waiting in Biarritz.
