Tomatoes: Morocco doubles France and settles on the world podium
With record revenues of $1.7 billion, Morocco has risen to the third rank of tomato exporters worldwide, now surpassing Spain and France in an ultra-competitive market dominated by Mexico.
The Kingdom is confirming its meteoric rise in the global agribusiness by establishing itself on the podium of tomato suppliers. According to the latest data compiled by World’s Top Exports, Moroccan shipments generated an annual turnover of $1.7 billion, hot on the heels of the Netherlands ($1.9 billion) and the undisputed leader, Mexico ($3.3 billion).
This new ranking marks a symbolic turning point in the Mediterranean agricultural hierarchy. Morocco now outclasses its historical European competitors, relegating Spain to fourth place with $1.1 billion in revenue, and France to fifth place. This dynamic also allows Rabat to outpace other agricultural powers such as Canada, the United States and Turkey.
This performance is explained by an offensive strategy of modernizing value chains. The adoption of advanced agricultural techniques, the improvement of packaging and the upgrading of quality have allowed Moroccan producers to consolidate their market shares, particularly within the European Union, while diversifying their export destinations.
This result reinforces Morocco’s status as a key player in regional food security. Despite the climatic challenges and the volatility of production costs, the national strategies for enhancing agricultural products should allow the Kingdom to maintain, or even accentuate, its competitiveness against the giants of the sector in the years to come. The Netherlands next to surpass?
