Tomato Prices Soar in France, Morocco to Blame

At the Agde market in Hérault, some varieties are hitting the symbolic 8-euro-per-kilo mark. This inflation is also felt in supermarket aisles, with a 1.19-euro increase for French tomatoes and 74 cents for Spanish ones. Faced with these high prices, customers are forced to carefully compare offers, with some refusing to spend more than 3 euros per kilo, even though the return of fair weather is driving consumption.

This price surge is explained by a marked delay in summer production. As Franceinfo points out, yields in Morocco, like those of its Spanish neighbor, have been heavily affected by particularly unfavorable weather. Abdenassar Aarabi, a fruit and vegetable seller, observes this imbalance firsthand: "There’s strong demand and very few tomatoes for sale on the shelves. As a result, prices are going up. Compared to last year, it’s gone up 1 euro per kilo." The situation should ease in the coming days with the imminent launch of French harvests.
