French producers at war with Moroccan tomatoes

More than half of the cherry tomatoes consumed in France are imported, mainly from Morocco. To regain their sovereignty, French farmers are uniting and launching a competitively priced tray to compete with the massive imports from the Kingdom.

Morocco currently dominates the French market with 250-gram trays sold at 99 cents. This hegemony is based on extensive industrialization, low-cost labor, and the absence of customs barriers granted by Europe. According to RTL, the Kingdom benefits from a special export regime, allowing it to capture the bulk of foreign volumes consumed in the country.

Faced with this competition, the tricolor producers are retaliating by industrializing their own production. By adopting a single cardboard tray to reduce packaging costs, they manage to offer a price of 1.29 euros. Displaying the slogan "yes to French food sovereignty," this initiative aims to limit the gap with the Moroccan product to only 30 cents, while guaranteeing a national origin to consumers.

The French offer also relies on superior health guarantees thanks to stricter national phytosanitary controls. On a social level, the cultivation of one hectare of cherry tomatoes in France generates an average of 15 jobs. The challenge for growers is to encourage customers to accept this slight surcharge to support local activity and ensure, in the long run, the country’s food independence on this product.
