Tomatoes at €5 per kilo: Why Morocco’s crisis is exploding your grocery bill in France!
In France, tomato prices are experiencing a sharp increase at the beginning of spring. This surge is explained in particular by the difficulties encountered by producers in Morocco, hit by severe weather and phytosanitary problems.
French consumers are facing a hefty bill in the fruit and vegetable section. According to data reported by the newspaper Le Républicain Lorrain, the kilo of bulk round tomatoes imported from Morocco reached an average of €5.08 in mid-March, compared to €4.43 last year.

This price increase is explained in large part by recent weather setbacks. Violent storms have heavily damaged several agricultural facilities across the Kingdom, weakening crops destined for export.
To this capricious weather are added significant phytosanitary problems. These difficulties have led to a significant decline in overall yields, making Moroccan supply scarcer at the precise moment when French demand accelerates.

Since France imports approximately one-third of the tomatoes it consumes, its market remains structurally very sensitive to disruptions encountered by its suppliers. The price situation should nevertheless rebalance in the coming weeks with the overall increase in production volumes.
