Tomato Prices Surge in Morocco, Reaching 14 Dirhams per Kilo in Major Cities

After a short period of stability, the price of tomatoes has recorded a new increase in Morocco, reaching up to 14 dirhams per kilo in some cities like Casablanca.
New rise in tomato prices in Morocco. While the price of this product, which is very consumed by Moroccans, did not exceed 5 dirhams per kilo a few weeks ago, it has experienced a sharp increase in recent days. In Casablanca for example, on May 8, 2024, the minimum prices of certain food products and meats recorded an increase of 0.80 dirhams per kilo, and their maximum price of 2.80 dirhams per kilo, informs the weekly report on wholesale prices of meats, fruits and vegetables.
Thus, the price per kilo of tomatoes varies between 8.95 dirhams and 13.95 dirhams. The price of a crate of tomatoes can be set at 250 dirhams. This price increase can be explained "by various factors, such as weather conditions, supply and demand, production and transportation costs, as well as import and export policies," explains a fruit and vegetable producer to H24info, also attributing this trend to limited production and insufficient quantities available on the market.
As for fruits, particularly bananas, apples and local and imported oranges, their prices have not increased compared to the previous week.
