Theft of money at the Moroccan consulate in Dubai: the suspect arrested
The end of the run for a former employee of the Moroccan consulate in Dubai. Wanted by Interpol, the main suspect in a case of embezzlement of public funds was apprehended at the Casablanca airport. The damage is estimated at nearly 10 million dirhams.
Under an Interpol red notice, the man was arrested by the police upon his arrival at Mohammed V airport, before being transferred to the regional judicial police brigade in Rabat. The investigation requires in particular his confrontation with another employee of the consulate, already convicted in this case, who designates him as the true instigator of the embezzlement.
The scandal broke out last May, following an inspection by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealing serious management irregularities. Computer data manipulations would have made it possible to siphon off 10 million dirhams from the consulate’s accounts over several years.
The alleged accomplice, tried a few weeks ago, has already been sentenced to three years in prison for forgery and embezzlement. During his trial, he had claimed that the "mastermind" of the operation had fled abroad to avoid prosecution.
Presented before the Attorney General of the King in Rabat, the suspect was referred to the investigating judge in charge of financial corruption crimes. He was placed in pre-trial detention in order to deepen the investigations and determine the exact extent of this embezzlement network.
