Embezzlement at the Moroccan Consulate in Dubai : a manager convicted, another sought by Interpol
The Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeal of Rabat has delivered its verdict in the case of the embezzlement of funds at the Moroccan Consulate General in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. A manager has been sentenced to prison, but the main accused is still on the run.
It all started with an internal audit conducted on the accounts of the Moroccan Consulate General in Dubai by an inspection team dispatched to the site by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita. The report revealed financial irregularities in the management of stamp duties at the Moroccan Consulate General in Dubai, involving two senior Moroccan officials in this scandal. Based on the results of the investigation, the competent Moroccan authorities filed a complaint with the justice system. Bourita’s department has joined the case as a civil party.
One of the managers was arrested as soon as he entered the kingdom. After his arrest, he was brought before the competent prosecutor’s office in Rabat. Prosecuted in detention for the charges against him, he was sentenced on Monday to a criminal sentence of three years in prison, in addition to compensation of around 4.5 million dirhams to be paid to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, reports Assabah.
Meanwhile, the main accused in this case would still be on the run and actively sought in the United Arab Emirates and Morocco. An international arrest warrant has been issued against him. Interpol (International Criminal Police Organization) will have to facilitate the arrest and extradition of this accused.
