Tetouan drowning in garbage

The streets of Tetouan are drowning in garbage since the entry into strike of the workers in the cleaning sector.
Saturday night, exasperated, they invaded the depot of the company in charge of waste management, causing a nauseating accumulation in the neighborhoods and the anger of the inhabitants.
The anger is rising against the municipal council, accused of not having kept its promises. When awarding the contract by tender, it had sworn that the garbage collection would never be disrupted. 100 million dirhams later, it’s a massacre: the company is unable to honor its financial commitments or respond to the workers’ demands.
The strikers brush aside the company’s financial justifications and point to the shortcomings of the planned transition in the contract. For them, dialogue is the only way out. A constructive and rapid dialogue, far from the procrastination and neglect that, they believe, have led to this absurd situation.
Faced with the health and environmental emergency, the local authorities have finally taken matters in hand. On Sunday, an agreement was reached with the strikers for a resumption of work.
