Tax-Free Shopping in Morocco: 5 Ways Travelers Can Save Big on Purchases

Travelers, including Moroccans residing abroad (MREs), benefit from certain tax exemptions provided for in the General Tax Code. Here are five concrete cases where you don’t have to pay anything.
1. Purchases in Morocco benefiting from VAT refund
Non-resident individuals on short stays can obtain a refund of VAT on purchases made in Morocco, provided that the total value reaches at least 2,000 dirhams including tax and that the goods are intended to be used abroad.
2. Goods transported in your luggage
The goods purchased must be transported in your personal luggage and leave Morocco within a maximum of 3 months from the date of purchase. This condition is essential to benefit from the exemption.
3. Non-commercial purchases
The tax refund only applies to retail purchases, without a commercial character, made on the same day with the same seller. In other words: small personal purchases are exempt, but not wholesale imports.
4. Eligible goods for tax refund
Concerned are consumer goods or personal items (clothing, electronics, various objects) purchased in Morocco from a VAT-registered seller who has completed an export sales slip.
5. Excluded products
Certain products never benefit from the exemption:
• Food products (solid and liquid),
• Manufactured tobacco,
• Medicines,
• Unset precious stones,
• Weapons,
• Private means of transport and their equipment,
• Cultural goods.
If you are an MRE staying in Morocco, you can transport your personal purchases over 2,000 DH without paying taxes, provided you comply with the tax refund formalities and avoid the excluded products.
