Ambitious Gibraltar Tunnel to Bridge Europe and Africa by 2040, Faces 50 Billion Euro Price Tag

The project to build a tunnel connecting Morocco and Spain under the Strait of Gibraltar is progressing. Ultimately, it should help strengthen the movement of people and goods between Europe and Africa.
Spain had allocated a budget of 1.6 million euros to update the feasibility studies for the project. The tunnel should be 42 kilometers long and 475 meters deep. According to estimates, its completion could be achieved by 2040. The project aims to strengthen passenger and freight traffic between the two continents.
On the diplomatic front, the project should strengthen cooperation between Spain and Morocco, the two countries jointly organizing the 2030 World Cup and collaborating each year as part of Operation Marhaba, marking the return of Moroccans from Europe to Morocco during the summer.
However, significant challenges must be met to ensure the success of this project. The main one lies in the complex geological nature of the strait, an area of seismic activity. Furthermore, the issue of financing remains. According to sources, the tunnel between Morocco and Spain would require public and private investments of nearly 50 billion euros.
