Tangier Revolutionizes Public Transit: High-Tech 'Busway' System to Transform Urban Commute by 2029

Faced with rapid urban and demographic growth, Tangier is looking to improve the performance and quality of public transport services. In this regard, the "Al-Boughaz" Intercommunal Cooperation Agency in Tangier has launched an advanced project. This is a high-quality transport system (BHNS) or "Busway".

The tendering procedures have already begun. Technical studies, equipment procurement and installation are planned as part of the project. The project also includes training, operational testing, repair warranty, as well as maintenance and ongoing support services. Thanks to this system, it will be possible to track the buses in real time and know their operational status precisely. Another advantage: to offer direct and effective communication between the drivers and the main control center, as well as immediate supervision of the lines and dynamic fleet management.

The system is also capable of analyzing performance through accurate reports and modern measurement tools, while providing real-time information to passengers on arrival times, traffic conditions and potential disruptions. This functionality will reinforce punctuality and improve the regularity of journeys, and consequently the quality of the user experience.

The system is expected to start operating on the traditional bus network from December 1, 2025. It should cover the various urban and suburban lines. The next step will be to activate it for the "Busway" high-quality bus line that will connect the Mohammed VI University Hospital to the Tanger Balia area over a distance of 22 kilometers, passing through main axes such as the Avenue of the Royal Armed Forces, Moulay Ismail, Idriss I, and the Malabata road. The experimental phase of this line should begin on November 1, 2028. An official opening is scheduled for January 1, 2029.
